Modem, a Toronto-based startup, has raised $4.4 million USD in pre-seed funding to revolutionize the way developers manage their software products. Founded by Ben Vinegar, a former VP of engineering at Silicon Valley's Sentry, Modem aims to address the challenges faced by developers in handling the vast amount of information and keeping up with the rapid pace of development, especially with the advent of large-language models (LLMs).
The startup's unique approach involves integrating with existing software platforms to manage product workflows. It proactively identifies and flags bugs, curates support tickets, and even follows up with customers after software updates. This is made possible by Modem's ability to take action on behalf of users and respond to natural-language queries, such as identifying the biggest issues customers are facing.
The funding round, led by Silicon Valley's Accel, attracted the attention of veteran tech angels, including Cohere co-founder Ivan Zhang and Sentry co-founders David Cramer and Chris Jennings. Sentry has already become a client, utilizing Modem in its workflows. This investment comes at a time when AI-powered coding tools are transforming developer productivity, and startups like Modem are capturing a larger share of the software space in Canada.
However, the productivity gains from AI have been uneven. A study by the Complexity Science Hub found that generative AI tools increased programmers' productivity by only four percent on average, with the increase concentrated among senior developers. Another study by METR revealed that experienced developers took 19 percent longer to complete tasks when using AI tools, despite perceiving faster work. Despite these challenges, Modem has successfully sold its AI-powered product to small developer teams, offering a subscription model inspired by leading AI products.
Ben Vinegar's decision to build Modem in Canada, despite his time in California, highlights the country's potential in the tech industry. He emphasizes the importance of talent and the sense of community among Canadian companies, encouraging them to support each other's products.
