In a groundbreaking development that could reshape the landscape of artificial intelligence, Saimemory, a subsidiary of the renowned investment behemoth SoftBank, has entered into a partnership with Intel Corporation, the leading American chip manufacturer. This collaboration, announced on Tuesday, aims to propel the commercialization of advanced memory technologies that are essential to meet the increasing demands generated by AI and high-performance computing.
Known as the "Z-Angle Memory program" or ZAM, this initiative is designed to innovate memory solutions capable of supporting sophisticated AI applications. Prototypes of these next-generation memory systems are anticipated to emerge by the end of the fiscal year concluding on March 31, 2028, with a commercial rollout expected in fiscal 2029, according to a press release from SoftBank.
Following this announcement, shares of SoftBank saw a rise of 3.13%, while Intel's stock experienced an increase of 5% during overnight trading on the Robinhood platform.
Founded in December 2024, Saimemory will leverage Intel's extensive knowledge and technology in memory innovation, particularly drawing insights from Intel's participation in the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Memory Technology program. This program was dedicated to developing foundational technologies for cutting-edge memory systems, focusing specifically on enhancing the performance and energy efficiency of next-gen Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) utilized in computers and servers.
Dr. Joshua Fryman, an Intel Fellow and Chief Technology Officer for Intel Government Technologies, emphasized the urgency of this development, stating, "Standard memory architectures aren't meeting AI needs." He elaborated that Intel has pioneered a new memory architecture and assembly method that not only enhances DRAM performance but also reduces power consumption and costs. This positions the technology for widespread adoption over the next decade.
This strategic partnership arises at a time when the demand for memory in AI-related applications is skyrocketing, significantly outpacing supply and leading to shortages throughout the memory supply chain.
