KTM's 850cc MotoGP Engine Test: Unveiling the Lap Time Secrets (2026)

KTM's MotoGP future just got a whole lot more interesting! The Austrian powerhouse, KTM, is making waves with its new 850cc engine, and the early results are nothing short of surprising. Last week at Jerez, their test team got their first taste of the new engine, and the lap times have left them, in the words of KTM boss Pit Beirer, "very surprised."

What's the buzz about this new engine? Well, it's an 850cc unit, a change from the current 1000cc engines, marking the first engine formula shift since 2012. KTM is preparing for the 2027 season, which will bring this new engine to the forefront. The test, conducted by riders Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaro, provided some key insights. The bike used in the test didn't have any ride height devices active, aligning with the 2027 regulations. Pirelli tires were also used.

While specific lap times weren't released, Beirer shared that they were "very respectable." He highlighted the riders' enjoyment and the promising potential of the new concept.

"Riding without the ride height device worked perfectly, and everyone was surprised at how quickly the guys achieved very respectable lap times with the 850," Beirer stated.

And this is the part most people miss... The test wasn't just about the new engine. KTM was also able to optimize their 2026 bike simultaneously, showcasing their efficient approach.

Beirer added, "The test went exceptionally well for us, as we fully benefitted from being able to optimise the 2026 bike on the one hand, and simultaneously work on the 850 project with a completely independent unit."

This is a critical point: KTM is entering a new era in MotoGP, having joined in 2017. This marks their first experience with such significant rule changes. While no manufacturers have officially signed up for the new rules cycle yet, it's widely expected to be a formality.
