NAIA Nationals 2026: Day 1 Recap - Keiser Dominates, SCAD Upsets (2026)

Get ready for an exciting journey as we dive into the 2026 NAIA National Championships! Today marks the beginning of a thrilling four-day event, where 176 swimmers and divers from 26 schools will showcase their talents in Elkhart, Indiana. The women's and men's championships, now in their 69th and 45th years respectively, promise an unforgettable spectacle.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Day 1 kicked off with a bang, and it was the Keiser women who stole the show in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. They not only won their fifth consecutive national title but also shattered the meet record, which had stood since 2012. Natalia Janiszewska's blazing backstroke start set the tone, followed by a strong breastroke leg from Kate Vorontsova. Luiza Bersi's butterfly split was crucial, giving Keiser the lead, and Boglarka Zsunics sealed the deal with a record-breaking freestyle finish.

SCAD put up a valiant fight, finishing just behind Keiser and also dipping under the previous meet record. Jette Haedicke, Nikki Hahn, Valle Gonzalez Ares, and Louise Jones combined for an impressive 1:41.13.

The Masters team, consisting of Clara Patterson, Katherine Dyer, Megan Sutanto, and Kylee Sears, took the bronze, edging out St. Thomas by a slim margin.

In the men's 200 Yard Medley Relay, Keiser repeated their 2025 victory, but fell just short of their own meet record. Jet Fuhrmann, Noel de Geus, Isaiah Aleksenko, and Hanno Boeckmann combined for a solid 1:25.42, but it wasn't enough to match their record-breaking performance from the previous year.

Cumberlands took silver, with Brandon Holder, Leon Irmer, Ruthiik Satti, and Alexander Poulsen putting up a strong fight. William Carey's quartet of Yusuf Balaban, Hunter Boudreau, Nedas Giedraitis, and Adam Salama secured third place in a tightly contested race.

The men's 3-Meter Diving final saw top-seeded Adrian Avilan of Keiser dominate, scoring a whopping 367.65 points and winning by a significant margin. Evan Bennett from Aquinas College moved up to second place this year, while Owen Fleck of Bethel improved his position to third.

Keiser's Payton Whipple and Jace Champlin rounded out the top five, with Matthew Logston and Cooper Wasson from Aquinas College, and Troy Borrero also putting up impressive performances.

And this is the part most people miss...

The women's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay saw Keiser crush their own meet record from 2023, clocking an incredible 7:22.55. SCAD also broke the record, finishing second with a time of 7:24.41. Natalia Janiszewska and Alanis Santiago gave Keiser an early lead, but SCAD's Valle Gonzalez Ares, Lena Gerl, Jette Haedicke, and Louise Jones kept the pressure on. It was Luiza Bersi's anchor leg that sealed the deal for Keiser, as she powered through the water to secure the win.

The Masters team of Katherine Dyer, Clara Patterson, Megan Sutanto, and Kylee Sears took the bronze.

In a surprising turn of events, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) pulled off an upset in the men's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay. Zsombor Paksi, Jan Gastal, Zoltan Tompos, and Levente Mozsarik combined for a winning time of 6:29.22, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the field.

The Masters got off to a strong start, but Keiser and SCAD kept the race tight. It came down to the anchor legs, with Mozsarik splitting an impressive 1:35.69 to edge out Dylan Crane of The Masters and Jet Fuhrmann of Keiser.

After Day 1, Keiser leads the women's competition with 80 points, followed by SCAD with 68. The Masters are in third with 64 points. On the men's side, Keiser is on top with 121 points, SCAD is second with 64, and William Carey sits in third with 62 points.
