Could a surfing retreat in Morocco conquer my fear of the sea?
My fear of the sea is deep-rooted, stemming from a traumatic incident in Biarritz, France, almost 20 years ago. But it's not just about personal safety; my job as a journalist reporting on human atrocities has eroded my sense of security. I've become so anxious about the sea that even waist-high waves trigger panic. This fear is a stark contrast to my love for swimming and the ocean.
Determined to break free, I signed up for a week-long trauma surfing retreat in Morocco with Resurface, a company specializing in trauma recovery. The retreat combines surfing, yoga, and group therapy, aiming to create a 'flow' state for healing.
The retreat's EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) sessions were particularly impactful. EMDR, developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro, helps reduce distressing emotions linked to traumatic memories. The therapy involves bilateral stimulation, such as rapid eye movement or body tapping, while focusing on traumatic events.
Despite initial reservations, the retreat in Tamraght, a quiet surf town near Agadir, proved transformative. The experience of learning to surf, despite my lack of natural talent, was both exhausting and exhilarating. The process of catching waves, failing, and trying again became a form of meditation.
The group therapy sessions, led by psychologist Josh Dickson, were equally powerful. Sharing personal traumas and heartbreaks with a supportive group restored my faith in humanity. The retreat's holistic approach, combining physical activity, mindfulness, and emotional support, offered a unique and effective way to confront and overcome my fears.
While I didn't become a surfing pro, the experience taught me that facing fears head-on can be empowering. The retreat's combination of surfing, therapy, and a supportive community provided a safe space for personal growth and healing.
