Stepping into his shoes is Ben Dwarshuis, who will now represent Australia on the world stage.
This isn't entirely unexpected, as Cummins had a limited role in the recent Ashes series against England, featuring in only one of the five Tests. However, the Australian selectors had initially kept him in the provisional World Cup squad, holding out hope that he might be fit enough to contribute by the Super Eight stage, which is set to be held in India and Sri Lanka.
But here's where it gets interesting... The team changes don't stop with Cummins. Matt Renshaw has also been brought in to replace Matthew Short. Meanwhile, the veteran Steve Smith, despite his impressive performances in the Big Bash League, has not made it into the final World Cup squad. This decision, no doubt, will spark some debate among fans.
Selector Tony Dodemaide explained the rationale behind these choices. "With Pat needing more time to recover from his back injury, Ben is a ready replacement who offers a left-arm pace option as well as dynamic fielding and late-order hitting," he stated. Dodemaide further elaborated on Dwarshuis's strengths, saying, "We believe his ability to swing the ball at good pace along with clever variations will be well suited to the conditions we expect and overall structure of the squad." This suggests a strategic move to bring in a bowler who can adapt to the expected pitches and complement the existing bowling attack.
And this is the part most people miss... The selectors also addressed Renshaw's inclusion: "With the top order settled and spin-heavy conditions expected in the pool stages in Sri Lanka, we also feel Matt provides extra middle-order support, with Tim David completing his return-to-play program in the early phase of the tournament." Dodemaide added, "As a left-hander, he also offers a point of difference to the middle-order batting." This highlights the tactical thinking behind Renshaw's selection, aiming to add depth and variety to the batting lineup, especially considering the expected spin-friendly conditions.
It's worth noting that Renshaw made his T20 debut for Australia in a recent match against Pakistan in Lahore, scoring 15 runs in that game. The Australian team, led by Mitchell Marsh, is currently engaged in a three-match T20 series in Pakistan as part of their World Cup preparations.
The former champions are set to kick off their World Cup campaign against Ireland on February 11th in Colombo.
