A dramatic own goal from Nick Woltemade proved to be the difference as Sunderland narrowly edged out Newcastle United in a tense North East derby. This match, played on Wearside, saw Eddie Howe's Newcastle side struggle to break through the resilient defense of their regional rivals.
The first half was an energetic affair, with both teams eager to take the lead, but chances were few and far between. Newcastle tried to breach Sunderland's backline, managing to get past them a couple of times, but their final passes lacked precision.
Sunderland, on the other hand, focused on getting the ball into the box. Sunderland recycled the ball, Xhaka found Mukiele, and his outswinging cross was inadvertently deflected into the net by Woltemade, via the crossbar.
This goal sparked a period of pressure from Sunderland, and Howe responded with a triple substitution, bringing on Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, and Joe Willock for Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon, and Sandro Tonali. This change helped push Newcastle forward, and captain Bruno Guimarães tested Robin Roefs with a left-footed drive soon after. Guimarães came close to setting up Murphy, and he also tried his luck with a curling effort from outside the box, but Sunderland's defense held firm.
There were still moments of concern for Newcastle, as substitute Wilson Isidor tested Aaron Ramsdale with a shot from a tight angle, forcing a good save from the keeper. Another substitute, Yoane Wissa, almost equalized for Newcastle when a deflected cross from Murphy just evaded him, leaving him inches away from a crucial touch.
