A tragic incident has occurred at the Sand River Conservation Area in Buckland, Tasmania's southeast. A 31-year-old French man, residing in Victoria, lost his life while rock climbing with a friend. The climber fell from a cliff, plummeting approximately 20 meters to the ground. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, and the man was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he passed away shortly after arrival.
This incident marks the second cliff-related death at the reserve in five years. In 2021, an 11-year-old Victorian girl tragically lost her life after falling from a cliff during a walking and rock-climbing expedition with her siblings. The girl's death was attributed to a loss of footing while walking along the edge of the cliff.
The Tasmanian police have expressed their condolences to the man's family and are preparing a report for the coroner. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with rock climbing and the importance of adhering to safety protocols.
