Pebble Beach Company and HGCD unveil plans to reinvent The Links at Spanish Bay, one of Pebble Beach Resorts’ four premier championship courses. Following the final round on March 17, 2026, the course will undergo a comprehensive redesign to match the extraordinary quality of Pebble Beach’s famous 17-Mile Drive lineup.
Led by Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, and the Hanse Golf Course Design team, the 38-year-old Spanish Bay will be reimagined to fully exploit its stunning coastal setting. Drawing inspiration from Monterey Peninsula’s other iconic layouts, the project aims to deliver a course that is more enjoyable, playable, and strategically engaging for all golfers, while posing a greater challenge for today’s top players. Notable planned changes include:
- Moving multiple green sites, including the current 14th and 18th holes, to make room for a brand-new par-three that will replace the existing 13th.
- Expanding putting greens by roughly 40% and completely resurfacing them to provide smoother, more receptive targets and greater variety in hole locations.
- Replacing the surrounding rough with low-cut turf to increase recovery options.
- Widening fairways by about 30%, repositioning fairway bunkers, and fine-tuning contours to create forgiving yet strategic playing corridors.
- Reconfiguring and regrading tee complexes to improve sight lines, reduce forced carries, and inject excitement at every hole. Overall, forward tees will be about 500 yards shorter (4,705 total) while championship tees will be roughly 375 yards longer (7,115 total); the par will shift from 72 to 71.
- Redesigning the cart-path system to blend more seamlessly with the landscape.
Year-round conditioning and sustainability will improve thanks to new drainage and irrigation systems, a 12% reduction in irrigated turf, and an additional three acres of environmental habitat.
“Working on a project like this is a golf course architect’s dream,” said Gil Hanse, President and Lead Designer of HGCD. “The Spanish Bay site is among the finest for golf, with the Pacific surf providing a constant sensory backdrop. We’re excited by Pebble Beach Company’s commitment to delivering another extraordinary experience on the Monterey Peninsula. This project truly brings out the golfer in me as a designer.”
David Stivers, CEO of Pebble Beach Company, added, “We have strong confidence in the HGCD team’s ability to transform Spanish Bay into a must-play destination for any visitor to Pebble Beach. The vision emerging from the planning process is compelling, and we look forward to watching it unfold over the next year.”
The new Spanish Bay will join Pebble Beach Resorts’ roster of renowned public courses—Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, The Tiger Woods-designed 9-hole short course The Hay, and Del Monte Golf Course—marking a milestone as a crown jewel. The redesigned course is scheduled to open to the public on April 17, 2027, just ahead of the 127th U.S. Open hosted at Pebble Beach Golf Links for the seventh time. Public bookings for the new course are available via Pebble Beach Resort Reservations.
Construction updates and behind-the-scenes content will be shared throughout the process on Pebble Beach’s website and social channels. For general information about Pebble Beach Resorts, visit pebblebeach.com or follow Pebble Beach on Facebook and Instagram.
